Los Calchakis
Latin Music Legends
Founded by Hector Miranda in 1960, the Paris based quintet has been one of Argentina's most heralded bands. Performing on 19 instruments, Los Calchakis has expanded on the Spanish-Incan musical traditions of the Andes Mountains. They are considered as one of the most important groups folk of Latin America, with more than 40 records due to their credit. They made popular the Peruvian/Bolivian/Argentinian native folk music in Europe, starting a wave followed by many other bands.

The Paris-based quintet has been one of Argentina's most heralded bands. The group received a prestigious award from the Academy Charles Cros in 1971, their first LP promoted by Violeta Parra, won the highest award from the Académy Charles Cros in 1970. The "Loisirs Jeunes" prize followed in 1971, along with several "disques d’or” in France,Spain and Mexico. They played the soundtrack of "Etat de Siege" the film by Costa Gavras starring Yves Montand and composed by Mikis Theodorakis. They took part with Atahualpa Yupanqui in : "Soy Libre", a Belgian TV program awarded a prize at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland. Their lengthy list of hits include such tunes as "El Condor Pasa","El Dorado", "La Muralla" and "La Vasija de Barro."

South American music made an impact on Peel in the late 1960s, especially "Pescadores", a track from the album "La Flute Indienne Vol 1" by the Paris-based Latin band Los Calchakis, which became a favourite of the Night Ride era and was praised by Peel in his International Times column. (He revisited the track on the Peel's Pleasures show of 10 July 1982). The album also included the Peruvian tune "El Condor Pasa", later adapted by Paul Simon for Simon and Garfunkel's album "Bridge Over Troubled Water".

Los Calchakis are one of the most important Latinoamerican group in Europe today, they performed at several French classical music festivals and gave over 3000 concerts in the world’s greatest theaters, including the " Olympia" in Paris, the " Palacio de Bellas Artes" in Mexico, the " Victoria Hall" in Geneva, the "Lisner Auditorium" in Washington, the "Tivoli" in Copenhagen, the "Monumental" in Madrid and the “Suntory Hall” in Tokyo.
