Montserrat Martí
Tribute to Montserrat Caballé
She was born in Barcelona and is the daughter of the famous Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé and Spanish tenor Bernabé Martí. In 1993 he made his first appearance as a singer, with his mother, in the city of London. A year after a concert to raise funds for the victims of the Rwandan genocide, again with his mother. In 1998 he moved to Germany, where he began his solo career and where he won the role of Zerlina in Don Giovanni, presented at the State Opera in Hamburg.

Mother and daughter have sung together sometimes, on stage and on record.

She performed her opera debut in the Hamburg Staatsoper as Zerlina in Don Giovanni: “She sang a delicious Zerlina” (Die Welt). “She was a Zerlina with a pure and solid soprano voice” (Hamburger Anzeigen und Nachrichten). “The main event of the night was the debut of Montserrat Martí: an impressive Zerlina. A young soprano with a well projected voice and a solid technique.” (Das Opernglas).

Since then she was back to Hamburg for another series of Don Giovanni representations. Se debuted in the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, as Liú in Tourandot, reported in the news as “the birth of a star” (La Vanguardia – 29th October 1999) and “the birth of a new diva” (ABC – 28th October 1999).

Pupil of the Maya Plisetskaya ballet, she decided to alternate such activity with studies of music and singing,, participating to charity concerts such as “Concierto de Solidaridad para Ruanda” in Palma de Mallorca Cathedral, at the presence of H.M. Queen Sofia of Spain, the Hampton Court Festival in a benefit concert for the la Royal Collection Trust in the presence of its Patron the Prince of Wales and for the Olga Havel Foundation to the benefit of the disabled children of Praga. She also sang for UNESCO in Paris under the direction of Zubin Mehta. Montserrat Martí also performed in several different concerts and recitals in Europe among which the Berlin Deutsch Oper, the Frankfurt Alte Oper, the Hamburg Musikhalle, the Vienna Musikverein, the Salle Gaveauin in Paris, the Internacional Music Festival of Castell de Peralada, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, the Teatro Real of Madrid, the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and the Maryinsky (Kirov) Theatre of San Petersburgo.

She also sang the Mozart Réquiem, under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner and also recorded and sang in concert with Vangelis in a crossover repertoire. She was chosen by the Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robins Foundations as the protagonist (Maria) for the debut of West Side Story at the Scala of Milan. She participated to the commemorative gala for the 100th anniversary of the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, together with Yuri Bashmet, Shlomo Mints, Alexander Knyazev, Valery Gergiev, the Theater Maryinsky Orchestra and Choir of Saint Petersburg, as well as the Easter Festival in Rome, in the London Royal Albert Hall, in the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in the Philharmonie of Koln and the Peralada Music Festival.

During the last seasons she participated to “La Clemenza de Tito” at the Gran Teatro del Liceo and at the Palau de la Música of Valencia, to Massenet “La Vièrge” at the Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne, she was Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Palm Beach Opera, the Orfeo and Euridice in Barcelona at el Gran Teatro del Liceo, Despina in Così fan tutte and Edgar by Puccini (Fidelia role) at the Euro Mediterraneo Festival in Rome, the role of Octavie in Massenet Cléopâtre at the Gran Teatro del Liceo of Barcelona, as also in the Teatro Real of Madrid and se real concerts at the Konzerthaus of Vienna and Philharmonie of Kolhn Colonia, among others.

Has made a debut as protagonist in the Opera Mireille by Gounod at the Le Palais des Rois de Majorque in Perpignan, in the role of Musetta in La Boheme, made a debut in protagonist role of the opera Le Roi d’Ys and in the role of Glauce of the Opera Medea in the Taormina Festival.

Recently performed in 10 rapresentations of the ‘Gianni Schicchi’,with the Opera of Calaunya, performed in the role of Mimí in the Boheme at the Opera of Tesaliniki and subsequently with the Opera of Catalunya. Has interpreted the Expo of Zaragoza hymn for its inauguration and also realised a tour of several concerts and recitals across Europe among which we can remember the Koln philharmonic, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Munich Philharmonie and the Musikhalle of Hamburg. Has performed in the role of Doña Elvira in Mozart Don Giovanni, in the role of Micaela in Bizet Carmen, has interpreted the role of Liu in Turandot with the Catalunya Opera with whom in 2018 interpreted the role of Nedda in I Pagliacci, during the last year has performed in several and recitals across all Europe as also in the Mozart Requiem and the Petite Messe Solennele by Rossini in several Spanish theaters.

Last year once again performed in the role of Mimì in Puccini’s Boheme in the National Auditorium of Madrid.

She keeps collaborating with several charity initiatives, as always has done when her agenda allowed during all her career, such as the past November in the AXA auditorium to support the reformation of the neonatological ward of the Vall d ́Hebrón hospital in Barcelona.

She performed in Abril and May 2019 the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi and will continue with her recitals in her tight agenda among which there will be the Violeta role in the Traviata at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona.

Montserrat Martí has made several recordings for BMG (RCA) and Warner, as also several DVD like the Edgar by Puccini recorded in Rome.
